Lambertus Johannes van Heygen

Lambertus Johannes van Heygen , also Lambertus van Heygen (born December 9, 1920 in The Hague , Netherlands ; † May 30, 2007 in Weert , Netherlands) was Archbishop of Bertoua in Cameroon .

Life

Lambertus van Heygen joined the Order of the Spiritans (Congregatio Sancti Spiritus, CSSp) and was ordained a priest there on July 20, 1947 . In 1948 he was sent to Cameroon as a missionary .

In 1962 he was by John XXIII. appointed Bishop of Doumé-Abong 'Mbang in the Eastern Province of Cameroon to succeed Jacques Teerenstra . In 1983 he was appointed bishop of the newly founded diocese of Bertoua ; Elevated to the archbishopric in 1994 by John Paul II . His resignation was granted in 1999 by John Paul II, successor was Roger Pirenne .

He played an essential part in the missionary work in eastern Cameroon. He founded one of the largest seminaries in Africa.

Van Heygen kept his residence in Cameroon. He died in the St. Jans Gasthuis hospital in Weert, the Netherlands, and was buried in the Bertoua Cathedral.
