Like almost all British biathletes, Lance Hodgkins was a member of the British armed forces. He made his international debut at the 2002 European Biathlon Championships in Kontiolahti . He was 50th in the individual and 53rd in the sprint. For the 2002/03 season, the Briton made his debut in the Biathlon European Cup , in which he took over the season. In 2003 he again took part in the European Championships and again took places in the 50s in Forni Avoltri . At the 2004 European Championships in Novosibirsk , 20th place in the individual was the best result. At the start of the 2005/06 season , Hodgkins started in Östersund for the first time in the Biathlon World Cup and was with the season 21. Only towards the end of the season he ran the first individual races. The first was a sprint in Pokljuka , in which he achieved his best World Cup result as 83rd, which he could only adjust in 2007 in Khanty-Mansiysk . The highlight of his career was participation in the 2007 Biathlon World Championships in Antholz , where Hodgkins was 96th in the individual, 93rd in the sprint and 21st in the relay.
Nationally Hodgkins could achieve some success. With Shane Clash , Kevin Kane and James Williams he won the team competition title in 2005, as well as in 2006 with Simon Allanson instead of Williams. He also won the individual title in 2006 and with the 2002 relay he was bronze medalist in sprint and pursuit, in 2003 he was also third in the individual, runner-up with the relay and third with the team. In 2004 he was third in the individual, in 2006 in the sprint and second in the mass start.
