The country of Muszyna (Polish: Państwo Muszyńskie ) was a latifundy , around 450 km 2 in size, of the Kraków bishops in the Poprad and Dunajec valleys in the Beskydy Mountains . The seat of the latifundy was Muszyna Castle in Muszyna .

history

The latifundy was created in 1288 when the scholaster Wysz Niegowicki bequeathed it to the Krakow Bishop Paweł z Przemankowa . The land was administered by the Muszyna Castle. King Władysław I confiscated the property at the beginning of the 14th century from Bishop Johann Muskata , as he was sympathetic to the rebellion of Bailiff Albert . In 1391, the Kraków bishop Johann Radlica received the latifundy back from Władysław II . Władysław II is also said to have assigned the city of Tylicz to the country of Muszyna. However, the deed of gift is now considered a forgery from the 16th century. The return of Władysław II is sometimes even questioned. After that, Cardinal Zbigniew Oleśnicki is said to have received the goods from Casimir IV in 1440 . In the 16th century the area reached the Wallachian colonization and the number of places increased several times: 2 towns (Muszyna and Tylicz) and 35 villages. The latifundy accounted for 1/7 of the property of the Kraków bishops. The country of Muszyna suffered from robber baronism spreading across the Polish-Hungarian border area. Even before the First Polish divisions occupied Habsburg the Spiš towns and the country Muszyna 1770. The latter was, however 1772 again separated from Hungary and Galicia connected. In 1781 the Habsburgs dissolved the Muszyna region and took over the estate as a chamber property . Around 1785 the chamber property had 16,885 inhabitants, of which 14,919 (88.4%) Greek Catholics, 1,863 (11%) Roman Catholics, 103 (0.6%) Jews. Muszyna Castle was abandoned and fell into ruin.
