The Landes-Hypothekenbank Steiermark AG , (own spelling HYPO Styria ) is an Austrian regional bank based in Graz . It currently operates branches in Feldbach, Fürstenfeld, Graz, Judenburg, Leibnitz, Schladming, an advisory office in Bruck / Mur and a bank branch in the LKH Deutschlandsberg. Hypo Steiermark is 100% owned by Raiffeisen-Landesbank Steiermark AG .

history

The establishment of a state mortgage bank in Styria was first called for in 1854, and from 1863 it was repeatedly debated in the Styrian state parliament. Instead, other banks were founded that were allowed to issue Pfandbriefe and only then made long-term and secure land loans possible. In other federal states there had been mortgage banks for a long time: in Lower Austria since 1888, in Upper Austria since 1890, Carinthia followed in 1895/96, Vorarlberg in 1897 , Tyrol in 1898 , Salzburg in 1909 , Burgenland in 1928 and a mortgage bank was opened in Vienna in 1929 .

On July 17, 1930, the state mortgage company law and its statutes were passed in Styria at the Styrian state parliament meeting and thus a separate “state mortgage company” was founded. The board of trustees was also elected for the first time in the state parliament session on July 17, 1930. It met on October 4, 1930 for its constituent meeting and also elected the Presidium. The bank received repayable start-up capital of 50,000 schillings from the state to start business operations. The Landes-Hypothekenanstalt für Steiermark had its first business premises (opened on March 2, 1931) on the 1st floor of the Grazer Landhaus . The first director of the new institute was Hofrat Ludwig Koban (bank director 1931 to 1956, government director 1935 to 1938, state office director 1945–1950), who was primarily head of the state's finance department and also headed the state mortgage company for Styria.

In mid-May 1932, Hypo Steiermark was able to set up half of the lane in Herrengasse, to the right of the entrance gate of the country house, which had previously housed the State Foreign Traffic Fund, as a cash desk and thus offer cash customers direct access from Grazer Herrengasse . The first financial year extended to December 31, 1932 and thus comprised the period from March 1, 1931 to the end of 1932, i.e. over 22 months. The balance sheet total was ATS 5,989,028.47. The profit and loss account produced a modest surplus, although the entire formation costs of 44,903.48 schillings were covered in the first accounting period.

In the years up to 1937 the institute's total assets rose from ATS 5.9 million to ATS 17.4 million. When the German troops marched in in 1938, the board of trustees was dissolved and a temporary administrator was appointed.

In 1939 the bank moved to Radetzkystraße 15 because the new district administration needed its rooms in the Landhaus. The new business premises were acquired from the Deutsche Vereindruckerei, which is in liquidation. The company's headquarters are still located here today.

In 1945 the Landes-Hypothekenanstalt also made a fresh start. Instead of a temporary administrator, a board of trustees was reintroduced. Josef Wallner became the first senior curator. During the period of reconstruction, the bank also experienced an expansion of its business activities. From 1945 to 1954 the loan balance rose from ATS 29.7 million to ATS 99 million. The development of the Landes-Hypothekenanstalt followed the general economic upswing in Austria after the end of the war and especially after the State Treaty of 1955. Therefore a spatial expansion became necessary.

In 1971 the first branch was opened at the Graz regional hospital. In 1973 the house at Radetzkystraße 17 was bought by the “Chamber of Commerce”. In 1975 the bank changed its company name to "Landes-Hypothekenbank Steiermark". New branches were established and in 1977 the first was opened outside Graz in Schladming . In 1981 the Landes-Hypothekenbank turned into a universal bank, with the board of trustees and directors being replaced by the supervisory board and board of directors.

In 1995 the Landes-Hypothekenbank Steiermark was converted into a stock corporation. The state of Styria remained 100% owner . In 1998 the state sold 49% of its shares to Raiffeisen-Landesbank Steiermark AG . In 2002 the state of Styria reduced its stake to 25% plus one share.

Since March 2019, the state no longer holds shares in Hypo Steiermark. These were completely sold to the Raiffeisen Landesbank.
