The State Archives of the Canton of Glarus in Glarus is the central archive of the Canton of Glarus and its legal predecessors.

Task and stocks

According to the Archives Act , the State Archives have the task of preserving the canton's cultural heritage and safeguarding the canton's rights and claims and those of third parties. It serves the public administration and the authorities for the continuous and rational processing of their activities and guarantees for the cantonal bodies as well as for the public a permanent documentary tradition and the traceability of state actions.

The State Archives are responsible for archiving the files of the Landsgemeinde , the Landrat , the Government Council and the courts, the cantonal commissions, the administration and the cantonal public-law institutions with the exception of the Glarner Kantonalbank .

In addition to the files of the cantonal bodies, the state archive also stores documents from the state entities before the modern cantons were established. This includes the archives of the old country of Glarus , the archives of the denominational parts of the country up to the revolution of 1798, the Helvetic archive as well as the New Catholic, New Evangelical and New Common Archives from 1803 to 1836. In addition, the archive collects important historical records Documents of private provenance. This includes photographs, film and tape recordings, diaries of important personalities, engravings , maps , plans or the archives of associations and private individuals.
