history

From 1911 to 1945 the central administration of the Rhenish Provincial Association , the local self-government of the Rhine Province , was located in today's state house , and from 1945 to 1953 the provisional self-government. The governor sat next door in the Villa Horion.

In 1945/46 the state house was the seat of the province of North Rhine-Westphalia , it also housed various ministries of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1954 to 1959, the central administration of the Rhineland Regional Association was here , together with various ministries of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. After the regional association moved to the new Cologne State House , a thorough renovation took place from 1959 to 1961. From 1961 to 1970 it was the seat of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and from 1970 to 1996 the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs. The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and his State Chancellery resided here from 1961 to 1999 . Then Prime Minister Wolfgang Clement decided to relocate his official seat and the State Chancellery to the Stadttor office building .

In the years 1999 to 2000 there was another thorough renovation. From 2001 to 2002 it housed the Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Skills and Technology, and from 2002 to 2005 it was the seat of the Ministry of Economy and Labor. From 2005 to 2010 the Ministry for Generations, Family, Women and Integration was located there, and from 2010 to 2017 the Ministry for Health, Emancipation, Care and Age of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia .

In 2017, the state government under Prime Minister Armin Laschet decided to use the building , which is centrally located in the government district and representatively on the Rhine and Rhine promenade , as the seat of the Prime Minister and the State Chancellery.

State House of Düsseldorf on Bergerufer, photo Julius Söhn , 1911

The building was designed as a four-wing complex , with the main facade facing the Rhine on Mannesmannufer (formerly Bergerufer). Originally, three upper floors rose above the rusticated ground floor, and another floor was added after the Second World War . The main facade is divided into a central and two side risalite . The Villa Horion was built as the official and residence of the governor of the Rhine province - in the same architectural style and in structural connection with the administrative building of the provincial association .
