history

The state art exhibition was founded in 1987 with the aim of "presenting the quality and diversity of expression of Saarland artists in an exemplary selection and thus at the same time making artistic developments visible". In the beginning, artists who lived in Saarland, were born here or were closely connected to the state's cultural life could apply for a public tender. A jury then decided on admission to the exhibition . The exhibitions took place every two years until 1997. The show has been organized by a curator with two employees since 2000 . In addition, there was no public tender. The rhythm was extended to four to five years.

SaarART 2013

The curator of the 10th state art exhibition in 2013 was Andreas Bayer, who realigned the exhibition concept. For the first time at a state art exhibition as part of SaarART 2013, in addition to current artistic positions, earlier examples of regional art creation were also integrated.

With this art-historical contextualization, it was possible for the first time at a state art exhibition in Saarland to create an expanded, historically overarching form of image and work dialogue at the various exhibition locations and to re-examine the question of the topicality of current artistic themes and forms. From April 21 to June 16, 2013, SaarART 2013 showed more than 200 exhibits by 75 current artists as well as examples of work from 22 historical positions, including works by Monika von Boch, August Clüsserath, Hans Dahlem, Leo Erb, Leo Grewenig, Edgar Jené, Frans Masereel, Mia Münster, Otto Weil and Albert Weisgerber.

At a total of nine exhibition locations -    Saarland Museum Saarbrücken, Saarländisches Künstlerhaus Saarbrücken,  Stadtgalerie SaarbrückenMuseum Schloss Fellenberg Merzig, Municipal Gallery Neunkirchen , Museum Haus Ludwig in Saarlouis, World Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte , Museum St. Wendel , KuBa cultural center at the EuroBahnhof Saarbrücken - the art scene of Saarland is presented in a media-diverse and high-quality selection of artistic projects. In addition, Andreas Bayer integrated the “Film Show of the Greater Region” organized by the Saarland Filmbüro into his exhibition concept and thus created another forum for video and film art, among other things. a. from France and Belgium.

Furthermore, as part of SaarART 2013, the media art prize of the Saarländischer Rundfunk was awarded to the artist Claudia Brieske, who showed her video installation “Körpererschleusen” on the site of the Völklinger Hütte World Heritage Site.

An extensive accompanying program with artist talks, concerts, performances, guided tours and a special focus on educational programs for children and young people set special accents at all exhibition locations. SaarART 2013 recorded a total of 35,640 visitors, making it the most successful regional art exhibition to date.

The Saarland provided a budget of 150,000 euros for the exhibition project. Additional funding of 80,000 euros could be obtained from sponsors.

The new design for SaarART 2013 was conceived by the Saarbrücken agency Bureau Stabil. To support the curator, Kristin Schneider worked as a research assistant at SaarART 2013.
