The entire former area around the Evangelical Hospital Queen Elisabeth Herzberge (KEH) has been known as the Herzberge Landscape Park since 2010 . It is located in the Berlin district of Lichtenberg . Until 2007, the area consisted of a mixture of fallow, commercial, residential and green areas without joint development and with a variety of problem areas. The agricultural exchange Germany East e. From 2004 onwards, together with the Lichtenberg District Office, V. initiated a number of funded projects for the careful, natural development of the area into a model project for urban agriculture in Berlin. Over the years, the different areas were brought together in various stages and redesigned into agricultural areas, networked biotopes , path systems and recreational areas. The main structural redesign work was largely completed in 2013. The agricultural use through the extensive grazing of the areas with rough woolly Pomeranian sheep goes hand in hand with the maintenance and development of a species-rich and valuable landscape protection area in the district. An application has been made to the Berlin Senate to designate the Herzberge Landscape Park as a landscape protection area . This request was granted in spring 2019.

location

The Herzberge landscape park is bordered by a footpath and cycle path along above-ground district heating pipes (referred to in parlance as Rohrdammweg ) south of Landsberger Allee in the north, the inner Rhinstrasse on Marzahn-Hohenschönhauser Grenzgraben in the east, the areas of the former children's clinic Lindenhof and the central cemetery Friedrichsfelde in the south and the BVG depot Lichtenberg , the allotment garden connection Röder and the BVG stadium on Siegfriedstrasse in the west. The core area of the landscape park emerged from the southern area of the KEH and the former hospital estate park (used by a horticultural production cooperative during the GDR era ) south of the Herzbergstrasse route with around 100  hectares . Due to the dismantling of the Lichtenberg industrial transshipment station, which was located directly to the east of the BVG depot, and the track systems that connected it to the Tegel – Friedrichsfelde industrial line , including the dismantling of sidings to industrial companies, areas have already been added to provide the framework for a new one Form path system. The park received a further increase in area through the dismantling of the remains of the Lichtenberg stadium .

history

A large part of the current area of the landscape park was already used by the then urban insane asylum Herzberge as agricultural cultivation and grazing area with a central estate. Patients also found therapeutic employment in workshops and on agricultural land. In the course of development, the uses of the areas and buildings changed more often depending on requirements. With the development of the new building areas in Marzahn and the infrastructural connection, further interventions were made in the historical structure of the site. The tram line, originally ending at the hospital, continued through the park to Marzahn. The hospital was retained, the former agricultural land was given a new user with VEG Gartenbau. That opened a large greenhouse facility here in 1981.

The political change led to major restructuring, including on the site of what would later become the Herzberge Landscape Park. The VEG Gartenbau gradually gave up the management of their greenhouse complex. Some follow-up companies and educational institutions used the building until the late 1990s, before much of the area was subject to vandalism. Only a small part was and is still used for horticulture.

Design measures from 2004

New agricultural use

After many years of vacancy, the Lichtenberg district office, together with the agricultural exchange Deutschland Ost e. V. launched a comprehensive development project in 2004 as an “economic measure”. As a result of this process between citizens, administration, companies and other residents of the area, the district office decided in 2007 to implement the concept "Heart mountains - model of urban agriculture as a location motor". The implementation takes place in many small sub-projects and lasted until the late 2010s.

In the summer of 2009, the first 35 coarse woolen Pomeranian sheep were settled. In the meantime, around 50 mother animals graze with their lambs on the almost 20 hectares of pastureland every year. The animals are very popular with Berliners, especially with children's groups. The establishment of inner-city grazing as an alternative green space maintenance and form of land use in combination with local recreation is also regularly the subject of scientific studies in Germany and exemplifies other urban areas.

The extensive and model developments in the Herzberge Landscape Park have already attracted nationwide attention and were, for example, awarded in 2010 as “a special place of ideas” as part of the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative.

The Herzberge Landscape Park Friends Association, which was founded specifically, brings together committed citizens, interested institutions and companies with the aim of actively supporting the development of the Landscape Park in the long term. Smaller projects such as the nature and health trail have already been implemented with partners and sponsors. To establish public events, highlights such as a lambs festival , sheep shearing or harvest festival are celebrated.

The city farm has also been located in the Herzberge landscape park since the beginning of 2017 . Fish and vegetables are grown there in a closed cycle using AquaTerraPonik technology. The fish excretions are used as fertilizer for the plants, which clean the water so that it can then flow back to the fish. In the visitor center, those interested can find out more about the resource-saving, climate-friendly, urban agriculture and purchase fresh products in the farm shop.

Inclusion of existing buildings

The existing functional buildings (boiler house, garage complexes, marketing building) of VEG Gartenbau were partially converted into storage and operating areas by the agricultural enterprise. A small part of the former horticultural business is maintained and operated by invitrotec GmbH. The above-ground heating lines were removed and their concrete supports were used for other purposes.

The former marshalling yard connection Roeder was demolished in 2011/2012 and also converted into several standing pastures. During this redesign, the Herzberge Landscape Park was opened to the south via Gotlindestraße, thus connecting the Frankfurter Allee Nord area.

On the site of the old Lichtenberger Stadium , another standing pasture was completed in September 2013 along a newly created cycle path, which is now also being grazed.

fauna and Flora

The existing smaller forest area south of the hospital was cleared of garbage and scrap from 2008. Natural paths were laid out and the individual forest sections were protected by Benjes hedges . The population of birds, bats and other animals could be kept successfully through these measures. The natural flora could develop again. Today this forest biotope is a popular place to stay for walkers and residents.

The eponymous inland dune (Herzberg) with the Herzberg pond is located on the grounds of the Queen Elisabeth Herzberge Hospital. To the south of this are other small bodies of water that are connected to one another by ditches. This has u. a. a population of protected amphibians has emerged. With the creation of further bodies of water in the landscape park as stepping stone biotopes for amphibians, a comprehensive habitat for such species is to be created in the future.

New path system

A system of combined cycle and footpaths was designed for recreational use of the Herzberge Landscape Park and is being implemented gradually. In the final stage, the path system should enclose the landscape park and enable the crossing in north-south and east-west directions. Seating has been created at selected locations to linger, from which animals can also be observed on the pastures.
