The approximately 38 hectares large conservation area Elberg is cross-border in the two county's cities Wetter (Ruhr) and Witten in North Rhine-Westphalia. It was set up in 1984 in the course of drawing up the landscape plan for the Ennepe-Ruhr district and bears the serial number 2.2.19 in the partial plan for the “Witten-Wetter-Herdecke area”.

geography

The municipal boundary between weather and Witten is in the north of the protected landscape area of about 460 m length of the Deipenbecke , one of the Ruhr flowing stream formed. In total, around 94.1 percent of the protected area area belongs to the Wetteran city area ( Wengern district ), and around 5.9 percent north of the Deipenbecke belongs to the Witten city area ( Bommern district ).

The landscape protection area consists of two parts to the southwest and east of the flat Elberg knoll ( 159.4  m ). The eponymous hill itself lies outside the LSG. The two LSG sub-areas are separated from one another by residential developments along Höltkenstrasse.

The landscape in the LSG is characterized by deciduous forest and grassland with structured groups of trees , stands of old trees and two sieves with wet meadows and small bodies of water. There is a difference in altitude of 63 m within the reserve.

The approximately 17.3 hectare south-western section lies between the Wetteraner districts of Wengern and Trienendorf. It includes the sacrificial siepen flowing towards the Elbsche . The approximately 20.8 hectare eastern section lies between Wengern and the Witten district of Bommern. It includes the Deipenbecke-Siepen. Both sections are bounded in the east by the route of the former Elbschetalbahn . The protected area is crossed in an east-west direction by a 220 kV high-voltage line from RWE / Amprion .

Two cemeteries border the two sieves of the landscape protection area : in the south the Protestant cemetery Wengern, in the north the Protestant cemetery Bommern. There are paths in each of the wooded areas, which are mainly used by the local population and cemetery visitors for recreation. On the Deipenbecke, the Fabriciusstein commemorates the Wengeran pastor Johannes Fabricius, who held open-air services there during an outbreak of the plague in 1636.

urban planning

In its zoning plan , the city of Wetter intends to use an approximately 2.8 hectare grassland area of the landscape protection area for the construction of a new residential area . This area is located in the south of the eastern LSG section between Höltkenstrasse and Deipenbecker Weg. It borders directly on a deciduous forest within the protected area. A development plan procedure was initiated in early 2015.
