The Westermarsch landscape protection area is a landscape protection area in the Aurich district of Lower Saxony . It bears the number LSG AUR 00031 and is located entirely in the area of ​​the city of Norden in East Friesland . The older Neuwesteel landscape protection area, which bears the number LSG AUR 00020, is part of the landscape protection area. the district of Aurich is responsible. The landscape protection area serves to protect the EU bird sanctuary V03 Westermarsch .

Description of the area

The protected landscape area, designated on December 18, 2012, covers an area of ​​28.92 square kilometers in the Emsmarschen natural area. It is in close proximity to the main dike between Greetsiel and Norddeich and borders the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park on the lake side . The landscape protection area consists mainly of drained marshland, which is mainly used as arable land, partly also as grassland. Characteristic are the low density of settlements and the largely open structure without large stands of wood. The area is subdivided by sluice depths and wide and narrow ditches, individual bodies of water such as former bran removal points and pools , reed beds, sleeping dikes and the main dike.

A striking structural feature is the pumping station with the artificially created water surface of the reservoir s Norder Tief with a wooded island, which forms the core of the older Neuwesteel landscape protection area.

Flora and fauna

The area is an outstanding resting and wintering area for Nordic geese , ducks and Limikolen . In the view of the Lower Saxony Water Management, Coastal and Conservation (NLWKN) are the high populations of barnacle , Bläss- , ringed and gray goose , in the Leybucht have their beds and use the area as a food space, emphasized. Other bird species found in the area include common gulls and black-headed gulls .

For the limikoles of the adjacent Wadden Sea such as dunlin , curlew , golden plover and oystercatcher , the landscape protection area is of great importance as a flood resting place and source of food. Characteristic breeding birds are the bluethroat , the reed warbler and the Montagu's Harrier . These species are mainly found in Lower Saxony in the Westermarsch.

Protection purpose

The general purpose of protection is the “preservation and development of the area as a habitat for animal and plant species in need of protection and their communities, as well as a natural cultural landscape of particular character, diversity and beauty”.
