Lane Smith (born April 29, 1936 in Memphis , Tennessee , † June 13, 2005 in Northridge near Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Career

Smith studied at the New York Actors Studio and took on minor roles in the theater before he achieved greater prominence as a character actor in films such as Network , V - The Extra Terrestrial Visitors , The Red Tide , Air America or Mighty Ducks - The Superteam .

He is best known to television audiences as the Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White in the series Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark .

As a theater actor, he made a name for himself in the productions of Glengarry, Glen Ross and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest .

For his portrayal of Richard Nixon in the miniseries The Nixon Case , he was nominated for the 1990 Golden Globe Award .

Lane Smith suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis .
