Before the final run in New Plymouth, Briton Kelvin Tatum was 10 points ahead of Gerd Riss from Germany. A fourth place in New Plymouth would definitely have been enough for him to win the world championship. Both reached the A-final, which meant at least sixth place and 13 points. However, Tatum failed in this run, while Riss won it by a narrow margin. As a result, he got 25 and Tatum only 13 points and Riss was able to overtake Tatum in the overall standings.
