The Lange-Bibelwerk , actually theological-homiletic biblical work , is a series of biblical commentaries edited by Johann Peter Lange , which appeared within two decades from 1857 to 1877 by Velhagen & Klasing . "Lange, Bibelwerk" is printed on the spine of the individual volumes, which is how the colloquial term arose. The importance of the Bible work for the preparation of ministers for sermons was emphasized by the translation into American English.

concept

The aim of the book series becomes clear in the subtitle: "The Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments with regard to the theological-homiletic needs of the pastoral office in connection with well-known evangelical theologians". Accordingly, the Bible commentaries were written for preaching practice. Using the example of the most recent volume, the Isaiah commentary by Carl Wilhelm Eduard Naegelsbach from 1877, the structure and conception of the content of the biblical work can be illustrated: The introductory chapter deals with the historical background, the person of the prophet and, above all, with the "Authenticity and Integrity of the Book". Against the historical-critical view of the existence of a Deutero-Isaiah , who as a later prophet wrote down chapters 40 to 66, which has been represented since the 18th century , Naegelsbach tries to argue that said chapters came from Isaiah himself. He does this by making the theological argument that there is “prophecy in the supernatural, wonderful sense” (p. XXII), and by understanding Isaiah more as a compiler of existing materials than as a writer (which explains differences in style ). The Lange Bibles wanted to take the wind out of the sails of modern biblical criticism . The interpretation of the individual biblical texts is divided into exegetical considerations, dogmatic and ethical basic ideas and homiletic allusions. The "Exegetical Explanations" are based on quotations from the original Hebrew text. The “basic dogmatic and ethical ideas” usually consist of a list of text excerpts from classical theological literature. In the case of the "Homiletic Indications", the author of the Bible Commentary has more to say for himself by giving general and church year-specific information for preaching practice.
