Gotthard Victor Lechler

Gotthard Victor Lechler (born April 18, 1811 in Klosterreichenbach near Freudenstadt , † December 26, 1888 in Leipzig ) was a German Protestant theologian. He was superintendent and professor in Leipzig and ex officio member of the first chamber of the Saxon state parliament .

Live and act

After receiving elementary instruction from his father, Pastor Viktor Heinrich Lechler, Lechler entered the lower seminary in Blaubeuren in 1825 . In 1829 he moved to the Tübingen Abbey , where he studied theology and philosophy from 1831 to 1834 and obtained a double doctorate to become a Dr. phil. and Dr. theol. completed. He then took over a vicariate in Dettingen unter Teck , but was repetition at the seminary in Blaubeuren as early as 1835 and in 1838 moved to the theological monastery in Tübingen. In 1839 he became a deacon in Waiblingen , and in 1853 he received the same position in Knittlingen . In 1858 he took over the pastor's office at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and thus became the main pastor and superintendent of the trade fair city. Associated with this office was a membership in the first chamber of the Saxon state parliament , to which he belonged until his retirement in 1883. From 1858 to 1888 he was a full professor for church history at the University of Leipzig . During this time he took over the Dean's office of the local theological faculty five times.

Lechler wrote several books on the history of churches and the Reformation and worked on the General German Biography . From 1882 to 1888 he was editor of the contributions for Saxon church history .

Honors

Lechler was a privy councilor. He received an honorary doctorate from the University of Göttingen as Dr. theol. hc He was also made a Knight of the Royal Saxon Order of Merit . Since 1887 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
