Johann Peter Lange

Johann Peter Lange (born April 10, 1802 on Bies in the district of Sonnborn near Elberfeld (today Wuppertal ), † July 8, 1884 in Bonn ) was a German Reformed theologian .

Life

Johann Peter Lange was the son of a carter and the father of the philosopher Friedrich Albert Lange . Lange studied theology in Bonn from 1822 and heard, among others, Karl Immanuel Nitzsch and Friedrich Lücke and became a follower of Friedrich Schleiermacher's theology .

From 1832 he was pastor in Duisburg . Here he founded a women's association to support penniless women who had recently given birth and fought against child labor and made friends with Dietrich Wilhelm Landfermann . In Duisburg he also wrote in 1836 his work, directed against David Friedrich Strauss , On the Historical Character of the Canonical Gospels, especially the Childhood Story of Jesus , which in 1841 earned him the appointment to the University of Zurich (chair assigned to Strauss). In 1854 Lange accepted a position at the University of Bonn . From 1860 onwards he worked as a consistorial councilor, and from 1875 as senior consistorial councilor in the consistory of the Rhenish provincial church in Koblenz.

Lange was a fruitful author who published a large number of exegetical and systematic writings and who also commented regularly on church issues of the time. As a “ positive ” theologian, he continued to grapple with Strauss and opposed his life of Jesus with his own The life of Jesus, depicted in the Gospels (1844–47). His Christian Dogmatics (1849–52) and the Theological-Homiletic Biblical Work 1857–76, a series of commentaries for which Lange himself wrote a number of volumes and which are also included in the English translation for which Philip Schaff was responsible ( A Commentary on the Holy Scriptures, Critical, Doctrinal and Homiletical, with Special Reference to Ministers and Students , 1864-80) was very successful. Some of the hymns composed by Lange were included in contemporary collections, but none can be found in more recent hymn books .
