Langer Heinrich is the name of a floating crane that was used in the ports of Danzig and Rostock from 1905 to 1978. Since 1980 it has been one of the exhibits at the Rostock Shipbuilding and Shipping Museum.
history
The floating crane was built in 1905 by the Duisburg company Bechem & Keetman as a so-called luffing jib crane, assembled in Gdansk and put into operation by the Schichau works in Gdansk that same year . With a lifting gear of 100 tons and a lifting height of 50 meters, the Lange Heinrich was one of the largest floating cranes in the world at the time.
At the beginning of 1945 the Lange Heinrich was relocated to Rostock and operated by the Neptun shipyard from 1946 . A fundamental modernization took place there in the 1950s. Until 1978, the floating crane was then used not only for the transport of ship components, but also for heavy cargo handling and for salvage work in the Rostock ports.
After its decommissioning, the floating crane was taken over by the Rostock Shipbuilding Museum in 1980 and extensively restored from 1992 to 1995. Repairs to the underwater hull were already necessary in 1997 and major repairs and maintenance work followed in 2002 and 2005. At the end of 2010 a section of the pontoon had a leak and the penetrating water caused the floating crane to heel dangerously . After the approval of 350,000 euros by the Rostock citizenship, Lange Heinrich was towed to the Nordic Yards Warnemünde for emergency repairs on February 12, 2011 . In a second step, the crane boom was renovated in 2012 and since August 19, 2012 the Lange Heinrich has been back at the pier of the IGA 2003 .
