The Langes Bäuche is a former riding stable in Darmstadt .

Architecture and history

The elongated baroque building on Friedensplatz is one of the few structural remains of the New Suburb ( Mollerstadt ), which was laid out from 1695 . The Langes Bäuche was built around 1730 as a stables for Landgrave Ernst Ludwig's horses . The architect was probably Erich Philipp Ploennies .

Around 1820 the building was used by the diligence expedition (express mail). Twice a week, a diligence car drove regularly to Frankfurt am Main and was dispatched here. The mail that was transported by Reiter also had its acceptance point here.

After the post office was relocated, the vacant rooms were used for meetings, lectures and legal examinations and a sewing room for the Red Cross was set up.

Towards the end of the 19th century, the building was left to Gustav Lorenz for his attempts to combat epidemics in humans and animals.

When the building of the Grand Ducal Court wash house at Schlossgartenstrasse 4 was needed for the Technical University , the laundry was moved to Langes Bäuche .

The building was destroyed in the Second World War .

In 1959/60 the Langes Bäuche was rebuilt using some old workpieces. It has been used by the Grand Ducal Asset Management since 1960 .

The Institute for New Technical Form (INTeF) resided in the building until 2018 .

The elongated building has a full floor ( ground floor ) and a mansard floor . The door and window frames were made of sandstone . The keystone over a window dates back to 1730. The building has a slate roof and lattice windows .
