The long-fin mako ( Isurus paucus ) is a shark belonging to the order of the mackerel shark-like (Lamniformes) and the family of the mackerel shark (Lamnidae).
distribution
The long-fin mako is likely to be found in all tropical and subtropical areas of the Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans . Evidence is available so far from Cuba , Florida , the Gulf Stream , the coast of southern Brazil , West Africa , Madagascar , Taiwan , the Phoenix Islands and north of Hawaii . It is probably not uncommon in the western Atlantic and central Pacific, but it is in the other areas.
features
Long-finned macos have a slender, spindle-shaped body. Characteristic are the very large pectoral fins , which are longer than the head, and the large, crescent-shaped upper lobe of the caudal fin . The second dorsal fin and anal fin are tiny. The flat tail fin stalk is clearly keeled. The sharks are dark and bluish on the upper side, white on the underside and blackish around the mouth. The eyes are relatively large. The longest recorded length of the shark in a female is 4.17 meters.
Way of life
Long-finned makos are still little known. They live epipelagically at depths of 0 to 200 meters. The large, wing-like pectoral fins suggest a more lazy way of life than its better-known relative, the short-finned Mako . Long-finned Makos feed on schooling fish and cephalopods that live in open water .
They multiply ovoviviparously . Only two fry are born at a time because eggs or the other fetuses are eaten in the uterus. At birth, the animals are 92 to 97 centimeters long. With a length of 2.45 meters, the animals are sexually mature.
Attacks on humans of this type are not known. However, it is considered potentially dangerous because of its size and its large teeth.
