Lara Schnitger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lara Schnitger (* 1969 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch object and installation artist .

Life and art

Schnitger studied from 1987–1991 at the oldest art academy in Europe, the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague and 1991–1992 at the Vyvarni Umeni Academy in Prague . 1999-2000 she had a scholarship stay at the Kitakyūshū Center for Contemporary Art in Southern Japan. Today the artist lives and works in Los Angeles and Amsterdam as well as in Japan.

Schnitger experimented at the boundary areas of sculpture by creating - sometimes tent-like - textile sculptures from sewn and knitted fabrics, which are often combined with other materials (foam, wood, plastic). In the process, fragile abstract installations are created on topics that touch areas such as fashion, privacy and sexuality , which seem mobile and yet somehow natural. Schnitger also works with videos and photo collages ; the latter are currently influenced by their current habitat, Japan. The subject of her book Lara Schnitger: Fragile Kingdom ( Zerbrechliches Kingdom ) is textile art and art made from perishable materials. Her works can be seen in numerous internationally important galleries, collections and museums

For the street performance "Suffragette City", Schnitger created textile sculptures, quilts and corsages with slogans that comment on the state of society. The sculptural performance, which took place in the public space of the cities of LA, Basel, Paris, Dresden and Berlin, is considered a statement for equality and against populist movements.
