Larissa Jefimowna Schepitko ( Russian Лариса Ефимовна Шепитько ; born January 6, 1938 in Artyomovsk , Donetsk Oblast , †  July 2, 1979 in Redkino, Kalinin Oblast ) was a Soviet film director and screenwriter.

Larissa Schepitko, who was born in Ukraine , began studying film at the Gerasimov Institute for Cinematography with Olexandr Dowschenko and Mikhail Romm in 1955 . Her first short film was made in 1956 as a student. In 1963 she finished her studies with her diploma film Snoi . Between 1966 and 1977 she completed five feature films before her untimely death. Her works were characterized by an unusually creative poetry and philosophical depth.

Her last film Aufstieg (also known as The Elevation ) was awarded the Golden Bear at the 1977 Berlin International Film Festival . In 1979 she died in a car accident while filming her film Farewell to Matjora . The film was finally completed in 1983 by her husband Elem Klimow . As early as 1980, Klimow had dedicated a film portrait to his deceased wife, Larissa .

In addition to working as a filmmaker, Schepitko also appeared as an actress in film and at the theater in Kiev .
