Lars Gabriel Andersson (born February 22, 1868 in Vagnhärad , Sweden, † February 13, 1951 in Lidingö , Sweden) was a Swedish teacher and herpetologist .

Live and act

Andersson earned in 1890 his Bachelor of Arts, 1897 his Master of Arts and in 1909 his Ph.D. at the University of Uppsala with the dissertation "Investigations into the origin of the external genital organs and the anus in rodents". He worked as a school teacher for most of his life, except in the periods from 1894 to 1895 and from 1897 to 1902, when he worked in the vertebrate department of the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet in Stockholm . In 1906 he became an assistant teacher at a secondary school in Stockholm, then at a second and in 1912 he became the main teacher at a third Stockholm school. From 1920 until his retirement in 1933 he was the director of a high school in Lidingö north of Stockholm. During the entire time he was a volunteer at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet. Between 1898 and 1945 he published many scientific articles on amphibians and reptiles, including the first two in 1899 and 1900 on Linnaeus type specimens of snakes. His supervisor at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet, Einar Lönnberg , wrote an earlier article on the subject in 1899. In the period that followed, Andersson described numerous new amphibian and reptile taxas that were collected on Swedish expeditions in many parts of the world. The geographic scope was enormous and included collections from Africa , Madagascar , New Guinea , Borneo , Southeast Asia and from eastern Siberia . However, his main focus was on the herpetofauna of South America . Almost half of his publications describe taxa that were discovered in regions between the high Andes and Tierra del Fuego . His most extensive monograph and at the same time one of his last works (1945) deals with the amphibians in eastern Ecuador .
