LIHG championship

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The LIHG championship was an international ice hockey tournament that was held from 1912 to 1914. The tournament was organized by the Ligue International de Hockey sur Glace (LIHG), now the IIHF.

history

The tournament was founded in 1912 by LIHG President Louis Magnus as an alternative to the European ice hockey championship . In contrast to the European championship, the national teams were also allowed to compete with foreign players at the LIHG championship. It was hoped that this would improve the level of the game. In addition, the Oxford Canadians , a team of Canadian students from Oxford, England, who were a member of the LIHG, also took part in the first tournament . The tournament was therefore also referred to as the World Cup in the press. As with the European Championships, some of the countries were represented by club teams.

The first tournament was won by the Berlin Ice Skating Club for Germany, while the Oxford Canadians took second place and Belgium ( Brussels Royal IHSC ) came third. France ( Club des Patineurs de Paris ) took fourth place and Switzerland fifth and last place. The tournament took place in Brussels , Belgium , March 20-24, 1912.

Due to a feud between the French Louis Magnus and the Belgian Henri Van den Bulcke , who became LIHG President in 1912 after Magnus resigned after the European Championships, Belgium boycotted the LIHG Championships in 1913 and 1914, while France boycotted the European Championships during the same period.

The second LIHG tournament took place in St. Moritz , Switzerland , from January 22nd to 24th, 1913. Germany won the tournament again with four wins in four games. Great Britain took second place and France third. Bohemia and Switzerland occupied the last two places.

The third and final LIHG tournament took place from January 20-22 , 1914 in Chamonix , France . This year the tournament was merged with the Coupe de Chamonix . With a record of three wins from three games, Great Britain won the tournament, beating the winner of the first two editions, Germany, 3-2. Germany came in second, France third and Bohemia fourth.

The competition was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War. He was not accepted again after the war.
