Lars Harmsen

Lars Harmsen (* 1964 in Hanover ) is a German typographer , graphic artist and designer . The focus of his work is typography, corporate and editorial design as well as brands in space. He currently lives and works in Munich and Dortmund.

biography

After training as a printer's copy maker, Lars Harmsen studied visual communication in Basel and Pforzheim University . During his studies, he founded the design agency MAGMA in Karlsruhe in 1995.

Since 2011 he has been Professor of Communication Design and Editorial Design at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . In 2018 he was Associate Professor of Art and Design at the American University of Sharjah . He is also one of the editors and founders of the publication Slanted (together with Julia Kahl since 2014) and as an author for various design and typography publications.

Since 2014 he has been a partner and creative director of Melville Brand Design, Munich. He is the founder of Volcano-Type, a trading company for digital fonts, publisher of Slanted Publishers , and leads the joint screen printing project Poster Rex (founded in 2014 with Markus Lange).

Harmsen is a member of the jury of various design and typography awards ( Brno Biennale , Descom).

Awards

In 2013 he was awarded silver as "Visual Leader of the Year" ( LeadAward ) for his work at Slanted , ADC, Adidas , Bayerischer Rundfunk , Prestel Verlag , Seven One Media and the Vitra Design Museum .

In 2019 he won silver for the Slanted editions "Tokyo" and bronze for the edition "Dubai" at the ADC Festival.
