life and work

Lasse Thoresen played the piano from an early age . He gave his first public concert in 1967. He studied music theory with Fartein Valen and composition with Finn Mortensen at the Norwegian Academy of Music . In 1972 he completed his studies there. He then completed in-depth studies in electroacoustic music with Werner Kaegi in Utrecht and in musique concrète and spectral music in Paris.

From 1975 Thoresen worked at the Norwegian Academy of Music as a professor of composition, electroacoustics and sonology. In 2007 Thoresen was visiting professor at ESMUC in Barcelona. In 2013 and 2014, he taught as visiting professor at McGill University in Montreal.

Thoresen wrote numerous commissioned pieces. The piano trio Bird of the heart was premiered by the Oslo Trio at the 1982 Bergen International Music Festival. It was then interpreted by numerous piano trios in European and Canadian concert halls. The symphonic concerto for violin and orchestra from 1984 was performed in numerous European countries (including Germany). The work Emergence from 1987 was performed by the Oslo Philharmonic under its conductor Mariss Jansons on a concert tour through Europe, including Vienna. For three years in a row, from 2004 to 2006, Thoresen was Composer in Residence at the Festival Présence , Radio France's major music festival in Paris. In 2010 Thoresen won the renowned Nordisk råds musikkpris with his vocal sextet Opus 42 . Here he applied new singing techniques and microtonality . This work is heavily inspired by old Scandinavian folk music. He also wrote spiritual music such as B. the piece for the opening of the Baha'i World Center on Mount Carmel .

In general, Thoresen's work is influenced by Norwegian folk music, French spectral music, Harry Partch's tone system of pure tuning and Thoresen's own ethnomusical studies in Norway and Asia. His works since 1985 are based on microtonal principles. His approaches to instrumentation are characterized by their proximity to spectromorphology and the theories of Pierre Schaeffer . Recordings of his works can mainly be found with the Norwegian labels Simax and Aurora .
