Robert of Planta

Robert von Planta (born March 7, 1864 in Alexandria , Egypt , † December 12, 1937 in Chur ) was a Swiss philologist and Romance scholar .

Life

Robert von Planta's father, Peter Conradin von Planta, ran a trading business in Alexandria. After returning to Switzerland, the family lived at Fürstenau Castle in Domleschg . Robert von Planta studied classical philology in Basel , Berlin , Munich , Leipzig and Zurich . In 1890 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on grammar of the Oscar-Umbrian dialects. As a private scholar, he researched the history of the Middle Latin and Romansh language and founded the dictionary Dicziunari Rumantsch Grischun in 1904 with the support of the Societad Retorumantscha and the Rhaetian name book in 1924 .
