history

Portrait of the lighthouse keeper Romuald Łozicki
Coat of arms of Gmina Choczewo

During the expansion of the port, a wooden beacon was erected as a navigation mark in 1860, eight kilometers east of Leba (today Łeba) . Painted white and red, it was shaped like an eight-sided truncated pyramid. From 1904 to 1906 today's lighthouse was installed on the same dune. The old machine house was replaced by a new machine and keeper's house at the foot of the lighthouse around 1938. The company used to be controlled by a family of four. Oskar Thoms and P. Pruztt are named as the last German lighthouse keepers .

Its original colors, black, white, and red were applied in reverse order after World War II . Although Stilo-Kathen has been officially called Osetnik since 1948, the shortened name Stilo was also retained in Polish times. In 1948 Stefan Łozicki, a highly decorated veteran of the Battle of Monte Cassino (1944) took over the position of lighthouse keeper. After 33 years he passed the office into the hands of his son, whose portrait is on the tower. After Romuald and Weroniką Łozicki, today the grandson Damian Łozicki is the third generation to work at the lighthouse. Stilo is one of the few Polish lighthouses that also employs a woman. In 1997 the painting of the tower was renewed.

During a hurricane in 1970 a Danish ship, whose engine had failed, could be given assistance by radio.

For the 100th anniversary in 2006, the tower was completely overhauled with a new coat of paint. On May 29, 2006, the Polish Post issued a special stamp showing the tower.

The ensemble of lighthouse, two machine houses, a guard's house, outbuildings and forest paths was entered in the Polish list of monuments with the number 715212.

The tower is maintained and operated by the Urząd Morski (Maritime Office) in Gdynia .

description

The lighthouse was planned by the engineer Walter Körte and built on a foundation made of concrete and granite. The 16-sided tower itself consists of trapezoidal prefabricated elements made of cast steel that are screwed together. There are only three lighthouses of this type in the world. Overall, the tower is 33.4 m high. The lantern is painted white and has two surrounding galleries. The beacon is located at a height of 75 m above sea level, illuminates a sector from 50.5 ° to 290.5 ° and has a range of 23 nautical miles (43.5 km). The identifier of the fire has remained unchanged since the installation: a group of three flashes (0.1 sec each) that recurs every twelve seconds, with a sequence of three seconds. This means for each group: 0.1 sec flash + 2.9 sec pause + 0.1 p. + 2.9 p + 0.1 p + 5.9 sec pause. The antennas of a mobile radio station are attached below the first platform .

The gas burner for the beacon was followed by a direct current arc lamp with lens and diffuser. This was replaced in 1926 by a special 2000 W incandescent lamp. A gas lamp served as a failure reserve. A 2500 W incandescent lamp was used around 1950 to 1975. The 2500 W incandescent lamp from (approx.) 1950 was replaced in 1975 by three headlight panels with eight halogen lamps each . The facility was renewed around 2003. The emergency power generator and accumulators can maintain operation for 18 hours. The fire is switched on by a photocell or manually.

Fog horn systems

Jastarnia lighthouse

Simultaneously with the construction of the lighthouse, a fog horn (Polish: Nautofon) was installed on a 19 m high steel tower near the beach . The compressed air required was generated in the lighthouse's powerhouse. The sound signal also had a characteristic sound cycle of 35 seconds. The mean signal sequence was: 2.6 sec tone + 3.6 sec pause + 2.6 tone + 3.6 p. + 2.6 tone + 20 sec pause.

This was replaced in the 1950s by a brick tower of about the same height. The steel tube was dismantled and used to rebuild the 22 m high lighthouse Jastarnia (Heisternest) . In the mid-eighties the system in Stilo was shut down because fishing trawlers were now also equipped with radar systems. Two dismantled foghorns are on display at the lighthouse. In addition to the brick tower, the foundation of the steel tower still exists.

useful information

The lighthouse is located between those of Czołpino (Scholpin) in the west and Rozewie (Rixhöft) in the east.

The tower with 122 steps can be visited since 1992. It is open from June to August. There is an educational trail at the lighthouse that explains the vegetation of the coastal forest. The old lamp with a discus lens is in the Rozewie Museum.

Stilo or Stilo-Kathen got its name from the Stylow family, who lived there for several generations from 1784 to 1861.
