Laternea is a genus of fungus from the family of stinkhorn relatives (Phallaceae). It comprises two types that are neotropically common. The type species is Laternea triscapa .
features
As with all representatives of the stinkhorn relatives, the fruiting bodies develop from a so-called " witch's egg ". When ripe, this opens at the top and releases the receptacle . The receptacle is orange-red to pink in color. It has a spongy texture and, depending on the species, consists of 2–4 vertical columns, which have a free base and are fused to an arch at the top. Below the arch there is a special structure (glebifer) that carries the spore mass ( gleba ). In contrast to Clathrus , the pillars are never branched.

Similar genera
The full-grown fruiting bodies of the genus Blumenavia are similar, but differ in their pale color. Furthermore, the receptacle has several small glebifers that cover the inside of the columns.
etymology
The scientific name of the genus refers to the lantern shape of the ripe fruiting bodies.
