The deciduous forest nature reserve at Hasselbachgraben is located in the municipality of Simmerath , east of Roetgen and north of Lammersdorf on the eastern side of the road 12 .

description

This area has numerous deciduous forest stands, about a third beech and a third spruce . The total stands have different ages, lying and standing dead wood indicates the near-natural forest. The Hasselbach rises above the Simonsbrander Weg and flows through the area with source streams in natural structures. The striking Hasselbachgraben, which runs from east to west with its sidewalk footpath, belongs to the water catchment area of the Dreilägerbachtalsperre and was created in 1920. It begins below Raffelsbrand and flows into the Dreilägerbachtalsperre after about eight kilometers.

Particularly important is the 12 hectare natural forest cell No. 1 of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with the name Kreitzberg with a very old beech population with sessile oak and sand birch in the northwestern part of the area . The high proportion of dead and old wood is important for the cave breeders that occur . The association of state-wide biotope association of near-natural beech forests also assigns the nature reserve and FFH area great importance as a relict location of the species communities of the Rureifel, which is strongly characterized by spruce forests . The protection goal is the preservation of the extensive oak stocks , the natural rock formations and the extensively used oat meadows . In addition, the careful demolition of the spruce age class stands in near-natural beech forests is to be aimed for.

Protection purpose

Running waters with underwater vegetation are to be preserved, as is the beech forest. The area is important for the following species: black woodpecker , gray woodpecker , fire salamander and common frog .

These types of biotopes can be found in this area: springs, near-natural unspoilt stream sections, quarry and swamp forests, alluvial forests .
