The ground beetle-like flower predator or ground beetle-like raven- winged fly ( Anthophagus caraboides ) is a beetle from the family of ruff-winged birds (Staphylinidae).

features

The beetles reach a body length of 4.5 to 5.5 millimeters and have a yellow-brown shiny body, in which only the end of the abdomen is slightly darker in color. The head, pronotum and the shortened wings are clearly structured with dots and have short, close-fitting hair. The edge of the front two thirds of the pronotum is pulled down strongly so that it is hardly visible from above. The antennae of the animals are also yellow-brown in color, their fourth limb is twice as long as it is wide. From the pinpoint eyes ( ocelli ) there are gutters at an angle, which can be used to identify the otherwise poorly recognizable light ocelli. Like the other representatives of the genus Anthophagus , the ground beetle-like flower predator also has a small lobe at the end of each last tarsal link.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are found in almost all of Europe . They are especially common in central and northern Europe and in the central and northern European part of Russia. They also occur in places in England and Scotland . It is found on flowering shrubs from April to September, preferably in higher and humid areas. They occur up to an altitude of about 2000 meters, but are rare in the alpine and subalpine altitudes as well as in the lowlands.
