Laura Greene studied at Ohio State University with a bachelor's degree in 1974 (after which she was with Hughes Aircraft in 1974/75) and a master's degree in 1978 and at Cornell University , with a master's degree in experimental physics in 1980 and a doctorate in solid state physics 1984. She then worked at Bell Labs and then at Bellcore in Red Bank (New Jersey) and from 1985 a member of the Technical Staff. In 1992 she became Professor of Physics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign . She taught at Florida State University and is a senior scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory there.

She has been involved in researching high-temperature superconductors since the pioneering days . In general, she deals with strongly correlated electronic systems in solid state physics and unusual superconductors.

She was married to Russell W. Giannetta, with whom she has two sons, and is married to the pianist Ian Hobson.

Greene is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1997), a member of the National Academy of Sciences (2006) and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In 1993 she became a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). In 1994 she received the Maria Goeppert-Mayer Award from the APS and in 1998 the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Prize from the US Department of Energy . In 2017 she was President of the APS.
