Helpmates is a 1932 American slapstick film starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy . In the German-speaking countries, the film is also known under the titles We are in a tight spot , Helpful hands , As floor engineers and When the mouse is out of the house .
action
Ollie stands in front of the mirror with an ice pack on his head in the morning. He remembers the wild party he had the night before and scolds himself. But it gets worse: the postman brings a telegram announcing the return of his aggressive wife from a trip at noon. If she saw the dirty house, it would be a bad experience for Ollie. So, in a panic, he summons his friend Stan to clean up the house that was devastated after the party. At first, the work seems to be going well, until one mishap chases the next. Stan destroys Ollie's entire wardrobe through his mishaps and lets the house run full of water. At the end of the film, Ollie not only receives a few bruises from his wife, but also loses his house. Stan had accidentally set it on fire while trying to light a fire in the fireplace. Ollie is now sitting alone in his completely destroyed house when it starts to rain.

Helpmates was filmed at Hal Roach Studios in Culver City from October 19-26 . In the United States, the film was released on January 23, 1932, in Germany, however, only on December 20, 1957 under the title When the mouse is out of the house , four months after the death of Oliver Hardy.
Stan Laurel gives a phone number in the film, in fact it was his real number back then. A mistake crept into the film: When Ollie's neighbor in the garden is hit by the plant, you can see a hand in the far right area of the picture that she throws at the neighbor.
The black and white film Helpmates in 1984 was the first of all films by the comedian duo, of which a color version was made. The colored version has some changes compared to the original version, which is why the black and white version is usually still shown.
German versions
- Dick und Doof als Strohwitwer is the title of the first German version, which was created by Riva GmbH in Munich in 1957. Stan and Ollie are both voiced by Anton Reimer .
- The second version with the title Dick und Doof as floor engineers was created in 1961 at Beta-Technik in Munich. The dialogues were written by Wolfgang Schick , directed by Manfred R. Köhler and the music by Conny Schumann . Walter Bluhm can be heard as Stan Laurel and Arno Paulsen as Oliver Hardy. This version was released on DVD.
- Under the title The Hungry Sailor , excerpts with Walter Bluhm and Bruno W. Pantel as Stan and Ollie were dubbed from the beta technology . The dialogues come from Heinz Caloué and Hanns Dieter Hüsch gave short comments.
