Laurent Menager , also Lorenz Menager , (born January 10, 1835 in Luxembourg - Pfaffenthal , Grand Duchy of Luxembourg ; † February 7, 1902 in Luxembourg) is a Luxembourgish composer , organist and music teacher .

Life

Laurent Menager grew up as the eldest son with five siblings in Pfaffenthal. His father Maximilian, a master baker, taught him to play the flute. In 1847 Menager attended the humanistic high school at Athénée de Luxembourg . A garrison musician in the Prussian army gave Menager violin, cello and piano lessons. His first smaller compositions come from the time he was studying harmony . After graduating from high school in 1855, Menagers studied composition with Ferdinand Hiller at the Conservatorium der Musik in Coeln .

Menager returned to Luxembourg City in 1856, initially without a degree, and found a job as a teacher at the local music school. In 1857 he took over the musical direction of the choral society Sang & Klang, which he co-founded . In 1860 he received the diploma of the Cologne Conservatory for his string quartet op. 1 in A major. From 1861 until his death he was organist at the Pfaffenthal parish church and worked as a music teacher at various schools in the city. In 1863, together with Johann-Anton Zinnen and others, he founded the Luxembourg General Music Association of today's Union Grand-Duc Adolphe (UGDA). In 1891 he became the vocal director here. He was also the director of the Philharmonic. He composed choirs, operettas, wind, symphony and chamber pieces, as well as masses and songs.

Menager died on February 7, 1902. Luxemburg mourned his death; His funeral was attended by around 6,000 people, including representatives from 45 associations.
