from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Laurentius Laurentii (also Laurens Laurensen) (born June 8, 1660 in Husum , † May 29, 1722 in Bremen ) was a German cantor and theologian.

biography

Laurentii attended schools in Husum and Lüneburg . He studied theology at the University of Rostock and the University of Kiel . In 1684 he was appointed to the Lutheran cathedral school in Bremen and at the same time appointed director of the cathedral music at Bremen cathedral .

In 1685 he established the first Bremen cathedral choir . Mostly the singers came from the cathedral school. The choir financed itself through performances at family celebrations and was initially only poorly supported by the community itself, although some cantors after him, such as Wilhelm Christian Müller (1784 to 1817), tried to increase the popularity of the choir. Laurentii composed church music and had some works printed himself. Some of the songs in the Bremen hymn book come from him. He was also a good organist.

Laurentii tended to pietism , an important reform movement in Protestantism . As a theologian and pedagogue, this brought him considerable difficulties in Bremen. In 1715 he changed to Hanoverian services. But he was not up to the new task. In 1722 he retired . Even before that he had been living in financially difficult circumstances, which were now getting worse.
