Laurentius Michaelis († May 30, 1584 in Jever ) was a lawyer , geographer and historian in the Jever rule .

Life

According to sources, Laurentius (Lorenz) Michaelis was born in Hohenkirchen in 1520/29 . He was the son of the licentiate Martin Michaelis, who was initially the city clerk in Bremen, then in 1546 Miss Maria was entrusted with the reorganization of the church system in the rule of Jever.

After studying law and working for the imperial chancellery, Laurentius Michaelis was employed on September 10, 1552 at the request of Miss Maria as a "clerk" in the Jever estate. He later renounced the Hohenkirchen parish loan that had been transferred to him and received land in Horum and a free apartment in the Mint in Jever. As a notary licensed by the Imperial Court of Justice, Michaelis was involved in the codification of Jever's city ​​law privilege from 1536 in 1572 . In 1573 he wrote the will of Miss Maria. Michaelis created several maps, including "Oldenburg Comit [atus]. - 1584", the first printed map of Oldenburg, and "Frisiae Orientalis nova et exacta descriptio. - 1579 [published 1593]". He collected books and writings and also tried his hand at historical representations ( rhyming chronicles ). Hermann Hamelmann makes several references to Michaelis as a historian in the Oldenburg Chronicle ("Oldenburgisch Chronicon") printed in 1599.
