Lawrence Sklar

Lawrence Sklar (born June 25, 1938 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American philosopher who deals with the philosophy of science and especially the philosophy of physics.

Sklar studied at Oberlin College with a bachelor's degree in 1958 and at Princeton University , where he received his master's degree in 1960 and his doctorate in 1964. In 1959/60 he was a Woodrow Wilson Fellow . From 1962 he was an instructor and later an assistant professor at Swarthmore College . From 1966 to 1968 he was an assistant professor at Princeton and since 1968 he has been at the University of Michigan , where he received a full professorship in 1974. There he is Carl G. Hempel and William K. Frankena Distinguished University Professor .

In 1963 he was visiting professor at the University of Illinois , 1968 at the University of Pennsylvania , 1970 at Harvard University , 1973 at UCLA and 1977 at Wayne State University . In 1998 he was a visiting fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, where he gave the John Locke Lectures. In 2007/08 he was President of the Philosophy of Science Association and in 2000/2001 President of the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association.

In 1974/75 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . He has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1996 . From 1977 to 1981 and from 1984 he was on the editorial board of Philosophy of Science .
