Lazzaro Caraffino (also Lazzaro Carafino ; * around 1590 in Cremona ; † June 15, 1665 in Como ) was an Italian clergyman and bishop of Como .

Life

He obtained the degree of Doctor iuris utriusque and was secretary to Cardinal Desiderio Scaglia . On December 19, 1622 he was appointed to succeed him as Bishop of Melfi . The episcopal ordination donated to him on 28 December 1622 its predecessor Cardinal Scaglia; Co- consecrators were Alessandro Guidiccioni , Bishop of Lucca , and Ludovico Sarego , former Bishop of Adria . After Scaglia's resignation, Pope Urban VIII entrusted him on January 7, 1626 with the management of the Diocese of Como, whose bishop he remained until his death.

Act

His term of office was dominated by the Counter-Reformation , especially in the Valtellina , where, as bishop, he promoted the establishment of parishes and churches. Relations with the confederates were strained when they tried to limit the judicial authority of the bishop. In this context, demanded Tagsatzung 1635 avail the appointment of a special commissioner for the Ticino bailiwicks that were placed under the spiritual jurisdiction of the Bishop of Como. When the dispute dragged on, the Confederates turned directly to the Pope in 1654 and requested the establishment of a special diocese , but this request was unsuccessful.
