Poland took part in the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne with a delegation of 64 athletes (49 men and 15 women) in 48 competitions in nine sports.

The Polish athletes won one gold, four silver and four bronze medals. The only Olympic champion was Elżbieta Krzesińska in the long jump. Jerzy Pawłowski was the only Polish athlete to win more than one medal in saber fencing with two silver medals. The flag bearer at the opening ceremony was the athlete Tadeusz Rut .
