Le diable au couvent ( German The Devil in the Convent ) is a French horror comedy from 1899 by Georges Méliès . The film was released by the film company Star Film . The film was released in America under the title The Sign of the Cross .
action
The devil jumps out of the baptismal font of a monastery and turns into a priest. There he preaches to some nuns and then transforms back into place. The frightened nuns flee from the church and the devil conjures his cronies into the church to celebrate their conquest of the church.
But when a white woman appears with a cross , the devil's cronies are immediately frightened and disappear from the church. Only the devil stays in the church and tries to defend himself. He has no chance as other white women show up with a cross. He tries to escape and is discovered by a guard at the monastery. The devil can outsmart him.
When the priest of the church tries to stop the devil, he is fooled. Only when the Archangel Michael appears does the ghost end.
Background information
For the film, a cardboard monastery church was built, including some of the devil's cronies such as B. a frog were made of cardboard. In the church there is a small pulpit , some chairs, a baptismal font and a royal tomb.
Many scenes were staged with a trap door and the stop trick. The priest's hunt for the devil is almost magical because he can disappear at any time if necessary.
