Lecanora esculenta , also known as manna lichen , is a crusty lichen .
Appearance
Lecanora esculenta is a gray to gray-brown crusty lichen made up of thick, cartilaginous and cohesive scales that lie loosely on the ground (sand or rock). Due to the loose contact with the ground, it is often blown together by the wind to form large clusters.
Occurrence
The lichen species occurs in deserts and desert valleys in the Middle East , Tatarei , Crimea and the Algerian Sahara .
use
The lichen is used as fodder and mostly sheep as food. People use the sweetish and flour-like taste of lichen as an ingredient for baking bread or other uses.
