Leci Brandão

Leci Brandão da Silva (born September 12, 1944 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ) is a Brazilian samba singer , composer and politician . She is one of the most important samba interpreters of the Música Popular Brasileira .

Political life

From 2004 Leci Brandão became politically active, advocated racial equality and was a member of the National Council for Women's Rights ( Conselho Nacional dos Direitos da Mulher ). In 2010 she was awarded the Diploma Bertha Lutz .

In February 2010, she joined the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB) and ran for the position of MP in the Legislative Assembly (ALESP) in the state of São Paulo , elected with more than 86,000 votes and re-elected in 2014. After Theodosina Rosário Ribeiro, she was only the second Afro-Brazilian to be elected to the São Paulo Chamber of Deputies. Politically, she also advocates tolerance for religions and cultures of African origin as well as for women, young people, LGBT people and rights for minorities such as the Brazilian indigenous peoples and the quilombolas .
