Leather Stocking: Der Wildtöter is an American western from 1957 based on motifs from the leather stocking novel Der Wildtöter by James Fenimore Cooper . The film premiered on September 10, 1957. In Germany it first appeared in cinemas on November 29 of the same year.
action
The game killer is a white hunter raised by Indians of the Mohicans tribe . With his blood brother, the chief Chingachgook, he saves the merchant Harry Marsh in a raid by the Hurons . They learn that the Indians want to attack the fur hunter Tom Hutter, who lives on a houseboat with his daughters Hetty and Judith . Judith wants to move to Albany with Marsh, but her father wants her to stay with him and her wild sister.
Wildslayer and Chingachgook want to help the besieged family. They soon find out that Hutter is an implacable Indian hater. His wife was scalped in an attack by Indians . Since then, the hunter has been collecting Indian scalps. When they explore the area, they find out that the Hurons want to attack the houseboat with canoes. When they want to destroy the canoes, they are captured by the Hurons. Marsh and Hutter free their helpers, killing and scalping two of the Indians.
The Hurons attack the houseboat and Hutter falls into their hands. Marsh wants to leave with Hutter's gold and the scalps she has collected, but Deer wants to exchange the scalps for Hutter's release. Notes in Hutter's Bible reveal that Hetty is an Indian who kidnapped Hutter as a child and raised his own daughter. Marsh has now stolen the scalps to sell. The unsuspecting game killer negotiates with the Hurons, who agree to the exchange. Hetty discovers the theft and tries to warn Game Killer and Chingachgook, but it's too late. Judith discovers Marsh's betrayal and runs away from him. Believing themselves betrayed, the Hurons take Deer, Chingachgook, Hetty and Judith prisoner. Hutter is able to free himself and attacks his opponents. He is killed in battle. In the resulting chaos, the other four escape into the forest and defend themselves against the attacking Hurons. When they run out of ammunition, Marsh comes to the rescue. He fired at the Hurons with a cannon from Hutter's houseboat, driving them away.
Judith forgives Marsh and follows him to Albany. Deer, Chingachgook and Hetty make their way to the Mohicans.
Reviews
The lexicon of international film describes the film as "dull, bumpy staged adventure entertainment."
“A humble, not boring game-killer film adaptation that tries more than other Cooper adaptations to do justice to the original. The landscapes, the décor of the moated castle and Flippen as an old hater are particularly personable. "
background
Dalton Trumbo's work on the script was not mentioned in the credits because he was on Senator Joseph McCarthy's "blacklist" at the time.
