Lee Nak-yeon (born December 5, 1951 in Yeonggwang ) is a South Korean politician who was the 45th Prime Minister of South Korea from May 31, 2017 to January 14, 2020  . Before that, he had been governor of Jeollanam-do Province since July 2014 . He belongs to the Deobureo-minju party .

After studying law at Seoul National University , he worked as a journalist for the Dong-a Ilbo newspaper until 2000 .

In 2000, Lee was elected to the Gukhoe and served as a member of parliament until he was elected governor of his home province.

In 2017, Lee was appointed to the post of Prime Minister by South Korea's newly elected President Moon Jae-in . Lee is said to have close contacts to Japan . He is also fluent in Japanese .

On January 14, 2020, Chung Sye-kyun took over the post of Prime Minister.
