The Leerbach is a 6.2 kilometer long left tributary of the Steinfurter Aa .

It rises on the eastern slope of the Schöppinger Mountain and flows on the outskirts of the nearby village of Leer near Horstmar in an initially northeastern direction. After the creek has left Leer behind, it turns increasingly to the east and maintains this direction up to the confluence with the Steinfurter Aa, which is only a short distance away.

Leerbach spring natural monument (Jannings spring)

The Leerbach spring near Leer at the foot of the Schöppinger mountain, also called Jannings spring after an old name of a neighboring farm , is an important natural monument in the Münsterland .

At Schöppinger Berg, on the impermeable "Osterwicker layers" of the lower campan, consisting of clay marl, there are fissured limestone sand and limestone marl rocks of the "Coesfeld layers" of the upper campan. The water penetrates the upper layers and accumulates on the trough-shaped, curved Osterwicker layers. On a source horizon at a height of about 90  m above sea level. NHN , the water comes out of the mountain in several springs, of which the Leerbach spring is the most productive. The spring pot measures eight to ten meters in diameter and has up to 14 water outlet points. The flow of the karst spring is between 25 and 100 liters per second, the spring only dried up in the extremely dry summer of 1976. The spring water has a temperature between 8 and 11 ° C, which fluctuates only slightly over the course of the year. Due to the constant conditions, a special flora and fauna has developed in the spring area. The barriers around the biotope should be respected.

Mills on the Leerbach

A little below Janning's source there are two watermills on the stream, Wennings Mühle and Schmeddings Doppelmühle ( grain and oil mill ) . Wennings Mühle is a ready-to-grind facility, which also includes a restored miller's house. Schmeddings Mühle has also been supplemented by a windmill since 1848, so that it could react more flexibly to fluctuating water volumes, the wooden upper floors of which were torn down by the storm in 1928 and were not replaced afterwards. The wings were lost in 1905.

Further use

The water from the Leerbach also fed the basin of the Nünningsmühle open-air swimming pool in what is now Steinfurt-Borghorst, which was operated from 1935 to the 1950s. To this end, a pipeline was laid under the Steinfurter Aa. The outdoor pool was outside of the village near the mouth of the Leerbach.
