The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB) is a research facility based in Potsdam . His research activities can be assigned to application-oriented basic research in the field of natural sciences in the field of agricultural science , engineering and biotechnology . The institute is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community (WGL).

history

The history of the institute goes back to 1927, when Ludwig-Wilhelm Ries founded an experimental farm for agricultural work on the “Gut Bornim” by the “Institute for Business Studies and Labor Management” of the Agricultural University in Berlin . In 1933 the experimental estate was converted into the independent “Prussian Research and Research Institute for Agricultural Work”.

On April 26, 1945, the Bornim experimental estate was occupied by the Red Army and used for their own supplies. In 1952 the Soviet Army handed over the experimental farm to the "German Academy of Agricultural Sciences", which had meanwhile been founded in the GDR, and research operations resumed as the "Institute for Agricultural Engineering" (IfL).

After the fall of the Wall , the institute, like all institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR , was subjected to an evaluation by the Science Council . The Science Council recommended the continuation of agricultural research in Bornim. As a result, the Institute for Agricultural Engineering Bornim eV was founded in 1992 and included in the joint funding of the federal and state governments as the Blue List Institute . In 2002 the name was changed to "Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Technology Potsdam-Bornim eV", and in 2016 the name was expanded to the current form.

tasks

The institute conducts application-oriented basic research in all areas of agricultural engineering .

The research fields of the institute are:

The research work of the institute is divided into six departments:

The institute's specialist scientific library has around 30,000 volumes.

financing

According to the financing model of the so-called Blue List institutions, half of the institute is financed from funds from the federal government and the federal states in the form of deficit financing. The federal portion is borne by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection , three quarters of the state portion by the Ministry of Rural Development, Environment and Consumer Protection of the State of Brandenburg . The remaining quarter of the country share is divided among all countries according to the Königstein key .

In 2010, the annual budget consisted of 8.3 million euros in basic funding and 3.1 million euros in third-party funding.
