The Lemei Rock is a shield volcano and part of the polygenetic volcanic area Indian Heaven in the US state of Washington . The volcanic field is halfway between Mount St. Helens and Mount Adams and dates from the Pleistocene and Holocene . Lemei Rock forms its highest point at 5,925 ft (1,806 m).

geography

Lemei Rock is the highest point in the Indian Heaven Wilderness in Washington. It is 2,405 ft (733 m) high . On a clear day, hikers can see the four closest volcanoes: Mount Adams , Mount Hood , Mount St. Helens, and Mount Rainier .

The shield volcano is crowned by a volcanic crater. While the rim of the crater is free of snow and ice, the snow in the high areas often remains until July. A small crater lake called Lake Wapiki can be found in the crater below the highest point. The Lost Creek and the Dry Creek flow on the southeast side of the mountain and into the White Salmon River , while the Smokey Creek , the Little Goose Creek and the Cultus Creek from the east and northeast side first into the Trout Lake Creek , which in turn flows into the White Salmon River at Trout Lake . The Rush Creek flows from the west side of the Lemei skirt in the Lewis River and flows between the Lower Lewis River Falls Recreation Area and the Swift reservoir.

geology

The Lemei Rock is one of the many shield volcanoes overlooked by cinder and sweat cinder cones that make up the Indian Heaven volcanic field. Around 60 eruptive centers are located in the 30 km long area, which is oriented towards N10 ° E. With an area of 600 square kilometers, the field has a volume of around 100 cubic kilometers and forms the western part of the 2000 km² Quaternary basalt field in the cascades of southern Washington, which is known as the King Mountain Fracture Zone and was formed at the same time as Mount Adams.

Climbing and recreation

The fishing and hiking destinations in the volcanic field around Lemei Rock belong to the Indian Heaven Wilderness , which is known for the high mountain meadows between the volcanic cones. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail traverses the volcanic field and wilderness area from north to south, known for the lakes and views of four nearby volcanoes: Mount Adams, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Rainier. The main hiking trails on Lemei Rock are the Lemei Trail, which climbs up the Lemei Rock on the east side, and the Wapiki Trail, which branches off the Lemei Trail and leads to the deep blue Wapiki Lake, the "crater lake" of Lemei Rock. The Filloon Trail starts at the rustic Little Goose Campground and meets the Lemei Trail in front of Lake Comcomly.

The campsite offers visitors access to two main entry points for the hiking trails (Indian Heaven Trail # 33 and Cultus Creek Trail # 108) and access for Huckleberry collectors to the Indian Heaven Wilderness, which is for their Huckleberries and for the volcanic field in which they are is known.
