Lennie Bush

Leonard Walter "Lennie" Bush (* 6. June 1927 in London , † 15 June 2004 ) was a British jazz - bassist .

Bush contracted polio as a child and had a limp from it for life. He first started playing the violin before switching to bass when he was 16; when he was 17 he had his first professional job in a variety show called The Rolling Stones and Dawn .

In the mid-1940s he played with Nat Gonella ; at the end of the decade he turned to bebop . Bush was a founding member of the London Club Eleven , where he appeared in a band with Ronnie Scott , Hank Shaw , Tommy Pollard and Tony Crombie . He later studied with James Merrett at the Guildhall School of Music and participated in the European tours of Benny Goodman , Louis Armstrong , Zoot Sims and Roy Eldridge .

From 1952 to 1957 he worked with Victor Feldman , 1954–56 with Jimmy Deuchar and 1955–57 with Dizzy Reece , also with Wally Fawkes , Stan Tracey and Tubby Hayes . In 1956 he began working with George Chisholm, which lasted until 1973 . In 1957 he was a member of Jack Parnell's ATV Orchestra and took part in recordings by Stephane Grappelli , Anita O'Day and Eddie Vinson (1980) during their visits to Ronnie Scott's. He gradually withdrew from the music scene in the 1990s, but continued to perform occasionally until his death in 2004.
