David Léon Cahun (born June 23, 1841 in Haguenau , † March 30, 1900 in Paris ) was a French writer and orientalist . He wrote many writings on Asia, Asia Minor and Turan .

The writer and photographer Claude Cahun was his great niece and Marcel Schwob his nephew.

Life

The Jewish family, originally from Lorraine , envisaged a military career for Leon Cahun. But after he made a trip to Egypt and Nubia in 1864, he decided to become a political writer and journalist in 1866. He wrote geographical articles for the magazine La Liberté (together with Émile de Girardin ) and later for La Réforme (1869) and La Loi . During the war of 1870/71 he was a correspondent for various newspapers and also briefly joined the troops as a volunteer on September 4, 1870.

Finally, he also used his historical and geographical knowledge to write his adventure novels ( Les Aventures du Capitaine Morgan and La Bannière bleue ). He became curator of the Bibliothèque Mazarine (1875).

In 1878 he traveled to Syria, Mesopotamia, Iceland and the Faroe Islands for several years. On his return he gave history courses on Asia Minor at the Sorbonne in 1890 . In 1896 he wrote the standard work on the history of Asia, which was based on his travels and studies.

Homage

As a homage to her great-uncle, his great-niece, the surrealist photographer Lucy Schwob, named herself after him from 1915 and used the pseudonym Claude Cahun , by which she is still known today.
