Leon Dembowski (born December 2, 1823 in Krakow ; † February 21, 1904 there ) was a Polish painter, draftsman and lithographer.

Life

Dembowski studied from 1849 to 1850 at the School of Drawing and Painting , today the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow , and from 1854 to 1855 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . He undertook cultural trips, in 1853 in the Poznań and Bydgoszcz Voivodeships, in 1854 or 1855 in Austria and Germany and in 1854 together with Józef Łepkowski in the Jasło district. On these trips he made numerous drawings of architectural monuments, sculptures and paintings. This was followed by a teaching position. From 1858 to 1872 the art professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, then he taught at the Annengymnasium and the Realschule.

His picturesque subjects were landscapes from the area around Krakow, the Tatra, Pieniny and the Sub-Carpathian Mountains, as well as architectural views of Krakow. He made the lithographs for “Starożytności różnymi czasy w Krakowie z ziemi dobyte” based on his own drawings and also provided templates for the lithographs for the editions “Wzory sztuki Średniowiecznej” by A. Przeździecki and E. Rastawiecki, Warsaw, 1855–1858. Dembowski's students include Wojciech Grabowski and Stanisław Tarnowski (1838–1909).
