Leon Vitali (* 26 July 1948 in Royal Leamington Spa , England as Alfred Leon ) is an English actor , who from 1977 until his death in 1999, the personal assistant to Stanley Kubrick was.

life and career

Leon Vitali studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art . Vitali has appeared in supporting roles on British television since the early 1970s. He was best known to a wide audience through the portrayal of Lord Bullingdon, the battered stepson of the title character, in Stanley Kubrick's costume film Barry Lyndon (1975). In 1977 he played the title role in the horror film Victor Frankenstein .

After Barry Lyndon was shot , Vitali asked Kubrick for permission to edit the film for free, which was the beginning of a long friendship. From 1977 Vitali largely gave up his acting career to work as Stanley Kubrick's personal assistant. Over time, he was seen as his “right hand man”, he was assistant director for his last two films and also took on tasks as casting director . Kubrick let him coach child actor Danny Lloyd for Shining, for example, and for Eyes Wide Shut he let him do some of the choreography for the cult dressed in red. In Eyes Wide Shut , Vitali also took on the small but piquant role of "Red Cloath", the all-red-clad leader of the orgy. Since Kubrick's death he has worked as a consultant for the restoration of the Kubrick films. He also worked as a consultant and producer on two films by director Todd Field .

The documentary Filmworker (2017) directed by Tony Zierra deals with the life of Leon Vitali and his collaboration with Stanley Kubrick. The documentary was shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2017 , among others . Leon Vitali is married for the third time today and has three children, including the actress Vera Vitali .
