Leonard Borkowicz (born January 4, 1912 in Vienna , † October 26, 1989 in Warsaw ) was a Polish state activist, commissioner of the Polish government in the Vorpommern district (1945 to 1946) and the first voivode of Stettin (1946-1949).

Life

Borkowicz grew up in a Jewish family in Vienna as the son of Emil Berkowicz and Laura née. Brings up and graduated from high school. In 1927 he joined the Polish Communist Youth and in 1930 the Communist Party of Poland . He was also a member of the Communist Party of Western Ukraine and the Communist Party of Germany . In 1932 he was sentenced by the Polish authorities to five years in prison, which he served in the Bereza Kartuska prison from 1936 to 1937 .

During World War II he was an officer in the Red Army and the Polish People's Army . From August to October 1943 he was in command of the 1st Prague Infantry Regiment.

He was awarded the Order of the Grunwald Cross Third Class (1946), the Order Virtuti Militari 5th Class and the Commander's Cross of the Order of Builders of People's Poland.

In July 1944 he was appointed representative of the Lublin Committee in the Białystok Voivodeship . From October 1944 to March 1945 he was the deputy head of political education at Milicja Obywatelska . In March 1945 he was a liaison officer between the Provisional Government and the 1st Belarusian Front . In April 1945 he was nominated as a government representative of the provisional government of the district of Western Pomerania. From 1946 to 1949 he was Provincial Governor of Szczecin and was responsible for all issues relating to reconstruction.

In February 1949 he resigned from his position and was appointed Polish ambassador to Czechoslovakia . In 1950 he was fired after a scandal. He spent the last 10 years of his life in Warsaw, where he lived on his small pension in poor conditions. He committed suicide and was buried in the North Cemetery in Warsaw.
